SMU MITB Student Wins AI vs COVID-19 Ideation Challenge 2020

The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) is changing the face of business, and transforming the economy as well as the way we live, work and communicate today. Given this unprecedented COVID-19 global crisis, AI Singapore (AISG) launched the AI vs COVID-19 Ideation Challenge 2020, with the aim to encourage the curation of innovative ideas using AI methods and technologies to improve people’s lives during and after the pandemic.

Contest entries for the AI vs COVID-19 Ideation Challenge 2020 were evaluated by a Review Panel comprising of representatives from AISG, National AI Office and MOH Office for Healthcare Transformation. The ten best proposals were selected and awarded SGD1,000 each.

SMU Master of IT in Business (MITB) Analytics programme student, Huang Xiaoling, was one of the award winners at the AI vs COVID-19 Ideation Challenge organised by AISG. Some of the other award winners came from other Singapore public education institutions ranging from Secondary Schools, Institutes of Technical Education (ITE), Junior Colleges (JC), Polytechnics to Universities.

“The idea of harnessing AI for the greater good is the main motivation that drives me to participate in the AI vs COVID-19 Ideation Challenge 2020. I believe Singapore can leverage AI to solve real-world problems in various industries, for example, Education, which is close to my heart as a student. Therefore, my idea is to build a personalised teaching assistant to supplement Home-Based/Online Learning by tracking each student’s progress and prompting them for further readings.

The MITB programme is not just about mathematics and coding; it strongly cultivates a mindset of adopting technology for digitalisation and improving the quality of life. The experienced professors, instructors and teaching assistants in MITB have contributed greatly to my learning, as they come from a diverse set of backgrounds with vast experiences to share with their students,” says Huang Xiaoling, a current student of the MITB (Analytics) programme at SMU.
