Commenting on Huawei's progress, SMU Associate Professor of Computer Science Zhu Feida noted that Huawei has not only made breakthroughs in smartphone hardware, but also has a tendency to compete with Apple in the software ecosystem. He observed that the recent iPhone models have failed to generate the same sales frenzy in China, signalling a warning for Apple. However, Assoc Prof Zhu also pointed out that the United States has recently allowed Samsung, SK Hynix and TSMC to import American chip equipment into factories in China, sending a subtle signal of relaxation. This has sparked interest among more US companies. He concluded that besides studying how to regain the Chinese market, Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook's visit may also serve as an action to urge the US government to make more changes.
