More than half of students who graduated last year took on multiple internships during their university studies, despite needing just one to earn their degree. These students are keen to gain more industry experience to stand out in an increasingly competitive job market. BSc (Computer Science) student Justin Teo explains why he chose to pursue a 20-week work-study elective programme as his second internship, and how the experience has been beneficial. Corrine Ong, Director of Career and Employability Services at SMU’s Dato Kho Hui Meng Career Centre stresses the importance of holistic development through a variety of campus activities, rather than focusing solely on internships and grades. She highlighted that when students apply for internships, it is important to assess the quality of the internship programme, rather than seeking quantity over quality.
