In a commentary, SMU Professor of Information Systems (Education) and Vice Provost (Education Strategy and Innovations) Venky Shankararaman opined that universities must prepare students to think independently, question AI and demonstrate the value they bring. 20 industry partners from various sectors who met with SMU faculty across disciplines in June shared that they want graduates with strong disciplinary foundations who can build, manage and supervise AI agents. He said that the real design challenge for any university now is how to build a curriculum where students are still learning to form judgement alongside AI. At SMU, every school is mapping a progressive mastery journey for our students – when in their four-year education they must think and reason without AI; when they learn to apply it as their discipline expects; and finally, when they are trusted to use it freely and held to account for the judgement behind it.
