SMU, in partnership with Zespri, developed a tool called The Meal Decoder, an AI-powered tool built on food-recognition technology. This is based on FoodAI, a food recognition software developed by SMU Professor of Computer Science Ngo Chong Wah and his team. It allows users to snap pictures of various types of food and record the calories and nutrient content of what they consume. From 7 September to 4 October 2026, diners can try the tool and users will be able to snap or upload a photo of a hawker meal and it returns an estimated breakdown of the dish’s macro and micronutrients, along with how a simple addition can make a familiar favourite a little more nourishing.
