Synopsis
Tokopedia, the leading Indonesian technology company, has recently opened their data science office in Singapore. Founded in 2009, it has grown into a place where more than 4200 employees work towards one same vision: building an ecosystem where everyone can start and discover anything. With that mission, Tokopedia does not only focus on an online marketplace for physical goods but has created more than 30 products, ranging from digital goods to fintech, to serve its consumers in every aspect of their everyday life.
Data science is one of the major developments of our time. Every day we see new advances in deep learning and new AI applications making our lives easier. As Tokopedia seeks to democratize commerce through technology, its data science team plays a pivotal function in the adoption of state-of-the-art technologies.
Science and products are different by nature, which is why not all the data science teams function well. A clear roadmap is needed to lead a young data science team towards maturity. A good appreciation towards the difference between products and science will bring more innovations into production. The right culture is the key to help every data scientist succeed. In this talk, I will present insights into Tokopedia’s roadmap and how we integrate data science with products, along with interesting use cases.
