AI, Law and Ethics (1 CU)
Jul 2022 term, no pre-requisites
The course embarks on an investigation into some prevalent ethical and legal challenges
that arise out of the application of contemporary technologies in society.
Through this course, students will learn how to identify emerging legal and ethical
issues associated with the deployment of AI. Students will also be able to critically
evaluate current and upcoming legal and policy developments/regulations surrounding the
governance of AI technologies. It is expected that students will develop a critical
understanding of AI, law and ethics that is located in the scholarship of law,
philosophy, sociology, and political science. More specifically, in a series of lectures
and class discussions, students will have the opportunity to reflect on the following
themes:
- The interaction between law, policy, and artificial intelligence (“AI”)
- The situation and operation of AI covering both AI’s potential and risks
- Ethical and legal challenges to AI deployment in the legal sphere
- Contemporary and comparative approaches to the governance of AI
- Critical theories informing and shaping how we should govern AI
- The future of AI governance and the direction of the law
