About the Talk

In Gates Notes 2023, Bill Gates discussed how the age of AI has just begun, and how there were two demonstrations of technology that struck him as revolutionary.

The first was when he was introduced to the Graphical User Interface (GUI) in 1980,  and the second was when he met with the Open AI team in 2022, and challenged the team to train an artificial intelligence (AI) system to pass the advanced placement (AP) exam in Biology, and how GPT passed the AP Biology exam with amazing results. Since ChatGPT hello world moments, there is an explosion of novel Gen AI applications. Governments, people, and organizations want to learn it, understand it, and apply Gen AI technology in many of the things that they do. There is a sudden interest to learn how to tame language models of all sizes, and apply it to scenarios ranging from education, to finance, to healthcare, and more.

Some of these Generative AI projects thrive and have significant impact, while some of these projects struggle to deliver impact. This talk invites participants to think deeply about the ingredients of successful data science projects, recalling the basics of machine learning principles, and how these lessons apply to the age of today's AI. The talk provides a practitioner's perspective on the trends in machine learning (from decision trees to generative AI), state-of-artwork that is happening in Generative AI, and how we can all be part of it.
