SMU Assistant Professor of Information Systems Pradeep Varakantham was interviewed for an article which discussed the importance of enhancing surveillance measures to prevent and combat terrorism. The tussle between law enforcement agencies and criminals becomes increasingly complex by the day. Prof Varakantham said the application of game theory has become more important in recent years, as it enables authorities to develop strategies for effective crime prevention by analysing past crime data. He added that airports, train stations and seaports in the US are already utilising the system established based on game theory. SMU is collaborating with a professor from the University of South California to develop a system for security organisations which will assist in manpower deployment, and ‘randomly’ plan patrolling strategies based on past data. Assistant Prof Varakantham believes that this will be a major area of research that will be very useful and successful.
