SMU students designed apps to aid the visually impaired and people with dementia

Students at SMU have designed mobile apps to help the visually impaired and people with dementia to handle challenges they face in their everyday lives. One team has developed an app which leverages beacon technology and geofencing to help the visually impaired board the right bus, thus enabling them to travel independently. Another team tapped on Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) beacons and crowdsourcing to hasten the search for people with dementia who have gone missing. Volunteers running the mobile app on their mobile devices will be notified when BLE signals are received from missing persons who are wearing the beacon. The two projects are among the Internet of Things: Technology & Applications projects showcased at SMU.
