
On May 22, the AI & Society Symposium – Generative AI in Progress: Application, Governance and Societal Impact – was jointly hosted by Tencent Research Institute and SMU’s Centre for Digital Law at SMU. During the symposium, SMU Associate Professor of Computer Science Zhu Feida, Aptos Move Chair Professor and Associate Dean of SMU’s School of Computing and Information Systems highlighted the importance of composability and collaboration in generative AI, particularly in relation to data and AI sovereignty, with applications in areas like DeFi and Web3. Cheryl Seah, Director at Drew & Napier LLC and Industry Fellow at SMU’s Centre for Digital Law, delivered a presentation titled “Generative AI: Perspectives from Practice.” A panel discussion on the governance challenges of generative AI was moderated by SMU Associate Professor of Law Liu Han-Wei, Deputy Director of SMU’s Centre for Digital Law, and featured participants including Josh Lee Kok Thong, Senior Research Affiliate at SMU’s Centre for Digital Law. In the closing remarks, Assoc Prof Liu reaffirmed SMU’s ongoing commitment to leading digital law and policy research, and fostering collaborative innovation with industry partners.
