The results of a study conducted by International Computer Driving License (ICDL) Asia were presented at the ICDL Digital Literacy Day at SMU yesterday. The study involved 373 Singaporean students from eight higher education institutions, such as SMU, Temasek Polytechnic, Singapore Polytechnic, National University of Singapore, Kaplan Singapore and PSB Academy. It found that the participants’ average competency standard — based on the results of their ICDL tests — stood at 55 per cent, which is “relatively low” than the global passing standard mark of 75 per cent. SMU business students are required to complete a spreadsheet course which helps them acquire practical skills in modelling and resolving business problems using personal computers. However, other students cannot completely rely on obtaining such skills from their universities, said SMU Assistant Professor of Information Systems (Education) Swapna Gottipati.
