In an interview, SMU Associate Professor of Information Systems Debin Gao said that illegal betting sites pose several kinds of risks, such as whether the personal information shared with these sites is encrypted or whether it will be sold to other illegal betting sites or organisations. Assoc Prof Gao said that despite the Do Not Call Registry in Singapore, many people still receive SMS and WhatsApp messages about gambling sites because such messages originate from outside Singapore, beyond the reach of the laws of Singapore. It is therefore not possible to completely block these messages.
