Hong Kong was ranked third in the Asia Pacific on a global competitiveness report, right after Singapore and Japan. In a comparative review, Hong Kong was urged to learn more from Singapore, who is leading in the efforts towards building a smart city. Apart from smart transportation for commuters and smart care for elderly, Singapore has placed a great emphasis in grooming new talents for a smart city. In 2017, SMU School of Information Systems introduced the first Bachelor of Science (Information Systems) in Smart-City Management & Technology Major in Singapore. The Programme aims to nurture graduates who innovate solutions to urbanisation challenges through the application of interdisciplinary knowledge across technology, social sciences and management. In addition to understanding relevant technologies on Internet-of-Things (IoT), the Programme design also focuses on developing capabilities to analyse application data.
