SMU develops sensor system to monitor the safety of elderly who live alone

The SMU-TCS iCity Lab has developed and installed a sensor system in the homes of 120 elderly who live alone since the SHINESeniors project started in Nov 2014. iCity Lab’s academic director, Associate Professor of Information Systems (Practice) Tan Hwee Pink said that, based on the needs of the elderly, the sensors are installed at the main door, bathroom, or next to the bed in the elderly’s home. If an elderly person faints at home and the sensor system did not detect any movement for an extended period, the system will send an alert to the social worker concerned. The data collected through the sensor system can be analysed to understand if there have been any changes in the living habits of the elderly.in these seniors’ lifestyle through data analysis.
