Sanctions produced success, Huawei seizes more digital bridgeheads

SMU Associate Professor of Strategic Management Geng Xuesong noted that Huawei is now turning its ICT business into digitalisation and intelligence, integrating artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing technology, which will be of great significance to the digital transformation of enterprises, especially small-and-medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and start-up companies. From the perspective of local SMEs, Assoc Prof Geng believes that Huawei's strategy will empower local enterprises, help them accelerate their digitalisation process, and bring in more ICT talents. SMU postgraduate student Zhou Bowen, who specialises in researching on sanctioned Chinese companies including Huawei, added that the impact of US sanctions and chip supply cuts on Huawei is mainly reflected in the consumer business level, but Huawei's other businesses have maintained steady growth. He also observed from figures that Huawei's response to the impact of sanctions by developing more diverse sectors has been largely successful.
