A team at SMU is developing an AI-powered real-time coaching system that uses just a standard camera to employ computer vision and advanced artificial intelligence (AI) to assess whether yoga and various exercise movements are being performed correctly, whilst providing instant feedback. SMU Professor of Computer Science Rajesh Krishna Balan leads the team comprising PhD candidate in Computer Science Harold Abraham Joseph and Tran Ngoc Doan Thu, a research scientist and recent SMU computer science PhD graduate. Prof Balan explained that the initiative was conceived to help people exercise safely at home, particularly the seniors, as many are entering their later years and need to exercise. He said that all they need is a camera, a device they already own, and the system can provide them with immediate feedback. This episode is part of a four-episode TV programme series 《遇见AI》exploring the applications of artificial intelligence (AI) in Singapore. Another episode features the team developing a system with AI to help swim coaches understand how their swimmers can improve their aquatic performance.
