About the Talk
This study asks whether statements from government officials can affect private transfers, by examining private charitable donations supporting natural disaster relief efforts. We observe ethnic homophily among Hispanic donors and fundraisers in a charitable crowdfunding platform. The homophily becomes stronger following tweets from President Trump, even controlling for official policy statements from government bodies and the corresponding media coverage. This increase is not entirely driven by negative statements as we observe similar increase even after positive and neutral tweets. Our findings highlight the important role of public officials – and the public’s pre-existing view of those officials – in shaping the pattern of private transfers.
This is a pre-conference talk for the Workshop on Information Systems and Economics (WISE) and 2020 American Economic Association (AEA) Annual Meeting.
