ABSTRACT

The Internet of Things (IoT) is an evolving technology that has been identified as one of the key enablers for smart cities. It is characterized by vast numbers of connected devices that work in tandem to provide contextual information for sense-making and decision control. In this talk, we describe two ongoing research projects in which IoT is harnessed to enable inclusive and integrative societies for two different groups of beneficiaries - the elderly, and the differently-abled. The first project studies how IoT-enabled smart homes can be used for real-time monitoring of the medication habits of elderly, thus enabling timely care and interventions by their caregivers. The second project discusses how IoT devices are used to acquire provide passive, crowdsourced data from wheelchair volunteers, in order to discover barrier-free access paths in Singapore. These efforts help to ensure that our elderly and disabled friends are not left behind, as we move towards a technologically advanced smart nation.
