In an interview with Taiwan’s Commonwealth Magazine, SMU Professor of Information Systems and Director of the Living Analytics Research Centre (LARC) Lim Ee Peng shared information on the researches performed at the Centre, and how these studies complement Singapore's vision in becoming a smart nation. One such example is FoodAI – developed by LARC – which offers cutting-edge image recognition of Singapore food with state-of-the-art visual recognition technologies. The research team has built a large Singapore local food image database covering more than 1,000 popular food items and about 500,000 of these food items. The Health Promotion Board has incorporated this image recognition function into its Healthy 365 app – to date, over 35,000 users have used the image recognition function in the app. LARC had received a $25 million grant from the National Research Foundation for period of four-and-a-half years.
