About the Talk
Homophily, the tendency for humans to associate more with others who are similar to themselves, is pervasive in social and economic interactions. This study examines ethnicity-based homophily on a charitable crowdfunding platform, focusing on campaigns associated with the three major 2017 Atlantic hurricane season – the costliest season on record causing billions of dollars of damage. This study documents three related results. First, we identify ethnicity-based homophily in charitable crowdfunding. Hispanic fundraisers receive a disproportionally more donation from Hispanic donors. Second, we document a time-series variation in ethnicity-based homophily. The homophily is stronger following tweets from President Trump, increasing the proportion of donations from Hispanic donors to Hispanic fundraisers. Third, despite increasing ethnicity-based homophily, President Trump’s tweets do not appear to put Hispanic fundraisers at a disadvantage. Following his tweets, Hispanic fundraisers do not receive reduced amount of total donations.
This is a pre-conference talk for 94th Western Economic Association International Annual Conference.
