In the first of a five-week askST series on university education, senior education correspondent Sandra Davie addressed questions on university places – in particular, the sought-after spots for computer degree studies. In response to a parent's questions on what to consider when deciding between the various computing programmes offered across the different universities and asked for more information about computing degrees in SMU, SMU School of Computing and Information Systems and Lee Kong Chian Chair Professor of Computer Science Pang Hwee Hwa said the School currently offers four undergraduate computing programmes that target different job roles demanded by employers. He shared about the different focus of SMU's Computer Science degree; Information Systems degree; the BSc in (Computing and Law) in partnership with the SMU Yong Pung How School of Law; and a new computing degree in software engineering. Prof Pang advised students to first decide which area they would like to specialise in, and then consider the unique value propositions of SMU and the computing degrees it offers.
